5. Grizzly Bears of Knight Inlet
Departs: Vancouver, from May to October
Fly from Vancouver to Campbell River, where your adventure is centred
around the grizzly bear and its natural habitat. Knight Inlet is a 100 kilometre
fjord, which has been carved by glaciers, offering an incredibly scenic
environment for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Abound with grasses,
mussels, barnacles and salmon, the fjord provides perfect conditions for
grizzly bears to roam and feed. There are opportunities to view these
incredible creatures from the water, as well as on land using specially
constructed viewing platforms. You are accompanied by knowledgeable
guides who provide insight into the bears that call this region home. Your
accommodation for two, three or four nights is at Knight Inlet Lodge; a
remote rustic lodge which provides a relaxing sanctuary following a busy
day outdoors.
6. The Great Bear Rainforest
Departs: Vancouver, from June to October
The Great Bear Rainforest is the largest piece of intact temperate rainforest
that remains on our planet, and it is here that the Kitasoo/Xia’xais First Nation
have lived for centuries, sharing the land with the magnificent creature they
refer to as moskgm’ol – the white spirit bear. A stay at Spirit Bear Lodge offers
an opportunity to see these incredible bears for yourself, in addition to grizzly
bears and bald eagles. Following a flight from Vancouver to Bella Bella and
water taxi to the lodge, check in for a three, four or five night adventure.
Guided excursions, educational lodge lectures and all meals are included in
this very special experience.
7. Campbell River Fishing Adventure
Departs: Vancouver, from June to August
A great choice for either a professional or novice fisherman, this three night
excursion immerses you in a location renowned as one of the best places
in the world to fish. A floatplane from Vancouver transports you to Campbell
River, with a final destination of Bones Bay Lodge. Sitting in the lower reaches
of Knight Inlet, an ample opportunity of daily catches encourages you out
onto the water. Fish the migrating runs of all five species of Pacific salmon, or
bottom fish for halibut, ling cod and rock fish, whilst watching for a playful seal
or a Humpback whale breaching in the icy waters. Use of the lodge’s equipment,
along with the expert guidance of private guides, is included in the package.
8. Victoria Culinary Tours
Departs: Victoria, from January to December
Discover the historic, yet growing culinary neighbourhoods of Victoria on one
of the fun and entertaining gastronomic tours offered by Off the Eaten Track.
The Knife and Fort Tour takes you to pretty Fort Street; once known as antique
row, where you can feast on the meats, cheeses and teas that this area is
known for. Brewpubs and microbreweries abound in Victoria, so why not
sample four of the best on the Craft Beer Tour, which showcases a myriad
of ales and combines them with delicious dining. Both tours offer a great
opportunity to seek out local hot spots which aren’t usually on the tourist trail.
