EXPERIENCE & EXPLORE – ATLANTIC PROVINCES
1. Hopewell Rocks & Bay of Fundy Coastal Tour
Departs: Moncton, from May to October
No visit to the Maritimes would be complete without experiencing New
Brunswick’s incredible natural phenomenon. This full day tour, taking
around eight hours, allows you to witness the dramatic rise and fall of the Bay
of Fundy at both high and low tides. Expect pristine vistas, intriguing fossils,
dramatic coastal landscapes and you won’t be disappointed. The reddish
cliffs at Hopewell Rocks were first formed millions of years ago as a massive
mountain range; older than the Appalachians and larger than the Canadian
Rockies. Slowly eroded, mud, pebbles and rock washed down the mountains
into the valley, which over time became solid rock and forms the basis for
the flowerpot formations standing today. The tour also includes a visit to the
oldest operational lighthouse on mainland New Brunswick.
2. Island Drives & Anne of Green Gables
Departs: Charlottetown, from July to September
View rolling farmlands, stunning seascapes, pretty villages and bustling
harbours on a four hour scenic journey along the Green Gables Shore. There
are photo opportunities at quaint fishing villages, iconic lighthouses and Prince
Edward Island’s national park – Cavendish Beach. One of the day’s highlights is
a tour of Green Gables House. This old farm inspired L.M. Montgomery’s first
novel, Anne of Green Gables, published back in 1908. Each year hundreds of
thousands of visitors from around the world visit the site where the beloved
tale of a red-headed orphan was set. In addition to the Green Gables House,
several museums and sites invite visitors to learn more about both Anne
and Montgomery. The final stop, at Prince Edward Island Preserve Company,
provides an insight into the preparation of jams and marmalades from locally
grown fruits.
3. Brier Island Whale & Seabird Cruise
Departs: Westport, from May to October
Brier Island is a small isle in the Bay of Fundy, located off the northwest
coast of Nova Scotia. Its position provides an ideal location for a cruise of
discovery and a thrilling adventure. In addition to the educational and magical
experience of wildlife viewing, the cruises also yield important information
on endangered or rare species of dolphin, porpoise, seabirds and humpback,
finback and right whales. Choose between an exciting two hour Zodiac ride,
close to the water and action, or the comforts of a 50 foot Cape Island style
boat on a three hour experience.
4. Newfoundland Adventures
Departs: St. John’s, from April to October
Widely considered as the specialist for Newfoundland experiences, Linkum
Tours offer unique itineraries, ranging from relaxed touring holidays to
pulse-racing soft adventures. Guides and hosts are Newfoundlanders,
passionate about the place they live and preservation of the environment
for future generations. Although whales leaping through the air, moose
wandering out of the dawn mist and icebergs appearing on the horizon are
unquestionably memorable, the small touches such as local dining and quaint
accommodations in idyllic locations set these tours apart. A choice of nine
itineraries have been created to showcase Newfoundland, and each can be
completely self-guided, semi-guided with a host leading you through some
experiences, or fully-guided whereby a guide will accompany you the whole
way. Owning two award-winning lighthouse inns; Quirpon Lighthouse Inn and
Cape Anguille Lighthouse Inn, which offer comfort, history and scenic ocean
views, you can include a stay in one or both of these operational lights which
continue to guide voyaging mariners, undoubtedly adding a unique experience
to any Newfoundland holiday.
