Start with a little jaw-dropping scenery, add a pinch of adventure, a twist of culture and top it off with a cozy night by a roaring fire or an elegant dining experience. That’s the recipe for an unforgettable vacation in Colorado. Colorado’s spectacular landscape offers the perfect backdrop for vacations to suit everyone.

Denver – The Mile High City

Denver is alive with culture, incredible culinary experiences, luxurious shopping and a host of outdoor activities for the whole family. Enjoying 300 days of sunshine a year, Denver is a great city for outdoor events and activities ranging from parades, music and art festivals to balloon festivals and even a Rocky Mountain Highland Games. If you enjoy golf, there are numerous golf courses just a short drive from the city.

    Colorado Springs

From ‘wild’ to ‘mild’, you’ll find something new and exciting to do everyday in Colorado Springs! One thing you must not miss is Pikes Peak Cog Railway which is not only the highest Colorado railroad, it’s the highest cog railroad in the world. Enjoy the 3 hour, 9 mile journey which follows cascading streams and travels through pine forests until you move above the timberline where the scenery becomes rugged but no less spectacular.

    Aspen

There’s something in Aspen for everyone and at every time of year. Whether you’re looking for the perfect family vacation, solo adventure, romantic escape or group getaway, Aspen’s the place! Elegant hotels, shops and restaurants are on every street so you can enjoy every creature comfort whilst surrounded by the stunning grandeur of Aspen, Snowmass and Buttermilk mountains. Aspen’s also the home for some of the rich and famous so, whilst you’re watching the world go by, keep your eyes peeled for those famous faces.

    Beaver Creek

Just a few miles from Vail and Eagle Airport, Beaver Creek is one of Colorado’s newest townships. Enjoy the beauty of the region from the top of Beaver Creek mountain…easily accessible a short but spectacular ride by gondola. Shop, golf, ski, snowboard, cycle or just relax…it’s all on your doorstep and there are some magnificent nature trails to take.

    Estes Park Region

Rocky Mountain National Park surrounds the village of Estes Park with magnificent mountain scenery, abundant wildlife, miles of hiking trails and wonderful scenic drives including the Trail Ridge Road over the Continental Divide and the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway. The Estes Park region offers a wide variety of activities from the extreme of mountaineering to relaxing with a picnic alongside a rushing stream.

    Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde, Spanish for ‘green table’ offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made this area their home for over 700 years. There are spectacular archaeological sites and cliff dwellings throughout the park that are the best preserved of all throughout the United States. Take your time and spend a couple of days in the park…we can take care of your hotel reservation at the Far View Lodge.

    Telluride & Mountain Village

Telluride is a combination of the old and the new. Old town Telluride is a wonderful trip back to the old west; lots of character and charm. The ‘new’ Telluride is just over the mountain at Mountain Village where you’ll find superb lodgings available in hotels or private homes, magnificent golf, an array of shopping and dining and whether it’s winter or summer, it’s a hive of activity every evening. Not far from Telluride is the famous Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad – it’s a spectacular day trip for the whole family.

    • Top Tip 1

Even if you're not a skier, take a gondola ride to the top of Beaver Creek Mountain at any time of year. The views will take your breath away.

    • Top Tip 2

Take the Durango - Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, but just do it one way (and take the motorcoach back the other way). The train journey takes around four hours and the coach journey back is just over an hour.

    • Top Tip 3

Another one for train buffs is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad which travels between Antonito in southern Colorado and Chama in northern New Mexico.

    • Top Tip 4

Visit the Four Corners, where you can have a foot and hand in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona - all at the same time.

    • Top Tip 5

If you're in western Colorado make sure you visit Black Canyon at the Gunnison National Monument. It’s a hidden gem and well worth a visit.

    • Top Tip 6

Looking for somewhere to have lunch in Denver? Check out Marlowe's Restaurant; it’s a deservedly popular spot with the locals for both lunch and dinner.

    • Top Tip 7

Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, just 15 miles west of Denver, is a world famous outdoor venue, with excellent hiking and biking trails as well as the only naturally-occurring, acoustically-perfect amphitheatre in the world.

    • Top Tip 8

Visit Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction, voted one of the ten best places for solitude in the US. Include the 23-mile scenic Rim Rock Drive in your itinerary. If you're going to hike in the area, be aware that midges can be a nuisance from mid May to mid July, so take some repellent. These rivers divide the park into four districts – today you’ll explore the northern section, Island in the Sky, where among other formations you’ll see a famed pothole arch, Mesa Arch, overlooking Buck Canyon. There is no better way to experience Canyonlands than at sunset – and the setting sun, during a picnic dinner at Dead Horse Point overlooking the U-turn in the Colorado River, is nothing short of inspirational.

    Bryce Canyon

Enjoy some free time this morning – go on an optional Dawn Patrol or visit the Film Museum at the lodge. For the past 70 years, many of the most famous western movies were filmed in and around Moab – learn about the filming locations and the stars who brought them to life. Gain insight from Dayton Duncan as to the best way to access the major sights in the national parks; some are available at a turnout, while others are inaccessible and require back-country hiking or an aerial overview – and that is exactly how you’ll tour Capitol Reef National Park today. Cross the Waterpocket Fold, which is sort of a “warp” in the Earth’s crust that runs nearly 100 miles, and see Strike Valley, the spectacular sandstone Capitol Domes that give the park its name, colourful cliffs and soaring spires. Arrive at Bryce Canyon National Park, home to some of Earth’s more whimsical geologic formations; spend some time at the Visitor Centre and enjoy some free time before dinner – there is an optional Sunset Scouts this evening.

    Zion

Another independent Dawn Patrol is available this morning – a hike along the rim of Bryce Canyon to catch the shocking array of colours illuminated by the first rays of light on the hoodoos below. More of a series of horseshoe “amphitheatres” than a canyon, morning walks reveal millions of pinnacles positively glowing. This afternoon, depart for Zion National Park; en route you’ll learn about the park’s complicated creation via a film  by Ken Burns, who shares his favourite memories of the park. Upon arrival, Ryan Paul, Curator of Frontier Homestead State Park Museum (formerly Iron Mission State Park), entertains with a lecture on “singaways” and the contribution of the Union Pacific Railroad to the story of the national parks. There is an independent Sunset Scouts opportunity tonight to the historic Virgin River bridge located at the mouth of the canyon.

Zion’s most striking images are unique sandstone cliffs that range from towering monoliths to narrow canyons, changing in colour from light cream to pink to red. Tour the park, with walks to Weeping Rock and the Court of the Patriarchs, then have some free time to explore as you please. Late afternoon, internationally acclaimed environmental historian and author Alfred Runte gives a talk on the history of the railroad in the national parks. This evening, you may choose to do an independent Sunset Scouts’ visit to the Virgin River, a tributary of the Colorado River that earned the designation “wild and scenic".
