Jasper is endeavouring to manage energy challenges following the Chetaman fires. Many businesses and premises have been without power for a number of days.
Temporary generator power has now been restored to most of the town. This has enabled essential services to re-open – such as grocery stores and petrol stations. With cooler weather forecasted for the region this week, they are optimistic that more consistent temporary power will be in place. Short-term outages may still occur over the next few weeks while the town of Jasper, ATCO Energy and Parks Canada work towards stable power restoration.
Jasper continues to remain open, but clients are encouraged to change their plans if possible. Many tours and rail services have been amended so that Jasper is no longer included as a stopover destination. Anyone still staying in Jasper is being told to expect limited power at their hotel and in town, which is limiting the services currently available.
The reconnecting to the provincial power grid is proceeding well and crews are working hard to restore full power service.
