Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay & San Simeon

Pismo Beach

This classic beach town is located on California’s famous central coast, half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles along Pacific Coast and 101 Highways. Soak up the sun on the beach or partake in the many water sports available including surfing, sea kayaking, boating and fishing. Pismo and Shell Beaches offer spectacular rocks, caves, cliffs, beaches and coves that are perfect for kayaks. Ride private trails through the spectacular Oceano Dunes and Beach. San Luis Obispo

Tucked between the Coast Range, the Pacific Ocean and right in the middle of Central Coast Wine Country, San Luis Obispo enjoys all the spoils of a life well lived on the California coast. Halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on historic Highway 1, San Luis Obispo enjoys year-round sun, a warm Mediterranean marine climate, a world-class wine region and thousands of acres of protected open space.

Downtown you’ll discover charming shops, restaurants and the weekly SLO farmers market with vendors selling flowers, food and other local produce. With a handful of hotels tucked into turn-of-the-century mercantile buildings, and a burgeoning nightlife and cultural scene, it’s no wonder that this town has won awards. Among it all is the beautifully preserved Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Along the shoreline from May to October the star attractions are humpback whales on route to Baja for the breeding season. Boat excursions and whale-watching tours will provide up-close encounters and memories to treasure for a lifetime.  You can also enjoy surfing at Morro Bay or swimming at Avila Beach, which offers slightly warmer water and calmers waves. Visit the Olde Port Fish Market at the end of Port San Luis Pier, where fishmongers cook up crab and sell their freshly caught produce. This laid-back, sleepy beach town offers a fantastic array of activities for all.

San Simeon

Approximately halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles along the Pacific Coast lies San Simeon. A key feature of the area is Hearst Castle, a hilltop mansion built by William Randolph Hearst in the early 20th century that is now a tourist attraction. Make a stop at Elephant Seal Rookery, where you will see hundreds of seals playing and sunning themselves on the beach. If you are a surf lover, head to Pico Creek Surf Spot located at the north end of San Simeon. Its a popular surf sport for short and longboarders as well as kite surfers. Explore the wonders of the central coast from your kayak or boat. Hiking and biking trails are abundant in the area with stunning views around every corner. Be sure to see the beautiful San Simeon Point and Cove. Drive into the backcountry and see the roads lined with vineyards and rolling hills. The region is home to over 80 wineries, so be sure to stop for a wine tasting.

Morro Bay

Morro Bay’s position on California’s legendary Highway 1 route makes it a compelling one-or-two-night pitstop for road trippers driving between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Its nearest airport is in San Luis Obispo County 16 miles away and reachable by car in less than 30 minutes. The walkable town is a charming seaside getaway in itself as well as a handy base from which to explore Central California. Accessible road trips from here include the Paso Robles wine region 40 minutes away and Yosemite National Park just under four hours away.

Visitors can stay close to the action in the bustling heart of downtown and the Embarcadero where restaurants and boutique shops are within easy reach, or at one of the properties scattered up and down the bay, where glorious ocean views and quiet spots win the day. 

Morro Bay’s dramatic coastline and unspoiled beaches make it a destination for ocean lovers and those thirsting for adventure. The north side of Morro Rock attracts beginner and pro surfers with its thrilling surf breaks while the calm waters of Morro Bay Estuary are ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding. Morro Bay Harbour is home to noisy sea lions and otters can be spotted bobbing on their backs. Peregrine falcons nest on the famous rock and bird watchers can look out for migrating seabirds such as herons and egrets. Whale-watching tours bring visitors close to gentle giants of the deep including grey, humpback and blue whales depending on the season.

Cycling trails and ATV off-roading experiences reveal the beauty of SLO County. Those preferring to walk have Morro Bay State Park to explore with its eucalyptus groves and panoramic viewpoints. Golf, kite-flying, shopping and museums are also available and the historic Hearst Castle is 30 miles away.
