Crater Lake

Crater Lake was formed 7,700 years ago, when a volcanic peak erupted then collapsed. The remaining caldera filled with water created the deep azure-blue lake you see today. Rim Drive offers dozens of lake viewpoints, and the grand 1915 Crater Lake Lodge offers another spectacular vantage point. From high atop the rim of Crater Lake, you can see what a wonder the world really is. A hike down to the water reveals new wonders. The water is so blue, so deep, it’s no surprise it’s the deepest lake in America, and one of the deepest on earth. That’s why it’s one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon.

Surrounded by cliffs almost 2,000 feet high and boasting a picturesque island with a violent volcanic past, Crater Lake is also home to hikes in old-growth forests and cross-country ski trips in the winter months. Many of the roads and facilities close during the winter, but the park is open and accessible all year long.

A good place to begin your visit to Crater Lake is at one of the two visitor centers. The Steel Information Center lies south of Rim Drive next to the park headquarters and is open year-round. In the summer, the Rim Village Visitor Center is open along Rim Drive on the southern side of the caldera. After gathering information on the park and its facilities visitors can make educated decisions about what recreation opportunities to pursue. Hiking, backpacking, camping, picnicking, and sightseeing are popular pursuits within the park. Boating and scenic driving around Rim Drive can be enjoyed by visitors during the summer months. In winter snowshoeing and cross-country skiing provide solitude and a little-known view of the park.

Grants Pass

An hour north of the California-Oregon border on the banks of Oregon’s legendary Rogue River, Grants Pass is an outdoor activities paradise with a historic downtown and delightful wineries. Visit Downtown Grants Pass or take the historic walking tour that starts at the Corral Tavern or check out 400 unique shops and antique shops and galleries. Enjoy dining in one of the many restaurants. There is something for every taste and budget.

Take time to visit The Glass Forge, where traditional Italian Art Glass techniques are used to create a variety of art. Choose a piece to have shipped home, or you may even have a go at creating your own! Your senses come alive with Southern Oregon wines. Travel from vineyard to vineyard and sample some of the wonderful wines. Oregon is home to many different wine grape varieties including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and more.

Spring and Summer bring warmer weather and clear skies, perfect for exploring the pristine hiking and biking trails that will thrill and challenge you. Winter’s runoff also unveils a playground for boaters, rafters, and fishermen starting from the deepest lake in the United States, Crater Lake. Klamath Falls & Merlin

Maybe it’s the nickname “Oregon’s City of Sunshine” or its proximity to Crater Lake. Then again, there’s a lot to do in Klamath Falls — like scenic hiking and mountain biking, golfing at four famous courses, freshwater fishing, and Oregon’s longest zipline. There’s also the oldest birding festival in the U.S. here if you’re interested in seeing more than 350 bird species in one place.

Merlin

At the gateway to the Wild and Scenic Rogue River, the Southern Oregon town of Merlin is a watery heaven. Rafters and kayakers delight in the white-water action, and fly fishermen are hooked on world-class fishing. Hike the 40-mile river trail, and check out Hellgate Canyon, made famous in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and still a Wild West of natural beauty. Study the habits of wild creatures at the local wildlife preserve.
