The Sunshine Coast & Sonora Island

The Sunshine Coast is a quick ferry jaunt from Horseshoe Bay, north of Vancouver. Although part of the mainland, this stretch of mountain-backed coastline, accessible only by sea or air, has the quiet pace of an island.

Boating among the coastal fjords, touring studios and galleries, beachcombing, golfing, hiking the Sunshine Coast Trail, kayaking and fishing are the area’s main attractions.

Just a 50-minute flight from Vancouver or a little over an hour’s boat ride from Campbell River on Vancouver Island, Sonora Island is one of the outer islands of the Discovery Islands and one of Canada’s most alluring and pristine environments.

The quietest way to see wildlife from the emerald waters just South of Sonora is to set out in a stable, easy-to-paddle sea kayak. Alternatively try your hand at salmon fishing and river fly fishing. Have fun on a river rafting tour and feel the spray on your face or canoe and paddle board on Florence Lake. Appreciate the wonderful scenery on a hike or take a tour to see the grizzly bears. You will not be disappointed with this natural wonderland.

Pender Harbour

Pender Harbour is an inlet on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, an intricate amalgam of beautiful bays and coves. A true outdoor paradise and only a two hour journey, including a 40 minute ferry ride, from Vancouver.

Enjoy all the water sports including ocean kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving, water skiing, boating and fishing. Head to the hills and spend the day hiking, mountain biking or hosebackriding on the beautiful scenic trails.

Take a discovery cruise through inlets and sounds, past enchanting waterfalls and majestic mountain formations. See ancient native paintings and observe hunting bald eagle. A harbour seal might cross your path or you may discover black bears digging for crabs and mussels along the shore. Experience the beauty of Princess Louisa Inlet or Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park.

Halfmoon Bay

Located across the Strait of Georgia from the southeast corner of Vancouver Island, Halfmoon Bay is nestled on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast.

A pretty village with funky shops, galleries and cafes sits among the trees, flanked by Coopers Green Park, a grassy expanse leading out to the water where divers often happen upon some of the largest octopuses in the world.

Protected by Thormanby Island, Halfmoon Bay’s calm waters are utilized by kayakers, sailors and boaters. For walkers and cyclists, Redrooffs Road is a six mile ring along the coast, and those on two wheels can push their way into the nearby Porpoise Bay Provincial Park.

You can hike or mountain bike to Triangle Lake, Trout Lake, Sargeant Bay and Cooper’s Green. Spend a peaceful day fishing or visit the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

Egmont

The tiny fishing village of Egmont sits on the Sechelt Intlet, a short drive up the Sunshine Coast from the ferry port city of Langdale.

Egmont is a small waterfront village on Secret Bay in Sechelt Inlet, located 6 kilometres east of the BC Ferry terminal at Earls Cove. Egmont is a three hour car and ferry journey or 45 minute floatplane ride from downtown Vancouver.
