Williamsburg (Historic Triangle)

Williamsburg was the capital of Virginia from 1699 to 1780, and is known for the significant role it played in the American Revolution. Located in the state’s southeast region, it forms what is called the Historic Triangle together with Jamestown and Yorktown.

The heart of the Historic Triangle is Colonial Williamsburg, a historic district and living-history museum where actors in period costume depict day-to-day Colonial life in the streets, restored stores, and workshops. This pretty colonial town, recreated to portray life in the 1770s, is a 300-acre complex, filled with taverns, trade-shops, community buildings, and private homes.

Discover Colonial Williamsburg and become a citizen of the Revolutionary City. Engage with the local community and experience first hand the daily struggles of wartime. Take a guided tour for the most immersive experience, and hop aboard a colonial horse-drawn carriage for the most enchanting ride you will ever take. If your stay includes an evening, then you must try one of Colonial Williamsburg’s three taverns, where attired waitresses serve hearty dining reminiscent of the period.

Take a tour of Jamestown Settlement. What was life really like for Pocahontas? Explore the replica of a Powhatan Indian village and meet interpreters who will discuss and demonstrate life in the Powhatan culture. You may also step on board one of the three recreated ships that brought America’s first permanent English colonists to Virginia on a four and a half month voyage. The obvious next stop is Historic Jamestowne, where you can take an archaeological tour of the actual 1607 James Fort site, hearing how the archaeological findings have changed our understanding of life in the fort’s early years.

Whilst in Williamsburg, you should not miss a number of other fabulous attractions which make this such a fun and diverse holiday destination. Take a trip to Williamsburg Winery, where you can take a sampling tour or even spend the evening in the wonderful accommodation on offer. This 300-acre winery has two restaurants, serving gourmet cuisine.

The drive into Yorktown, across the Colonial National Historical Parkway, is almost as delightful as the destination. Yorktown is such a pretty coastal community, with a long coastal boardwalk and golden beach. We suggest a Patriot Segway tour as an enjoyable introduction to the destination. You may also look to take a Yorktown Schooner Alliance boat tour out into the waters, for incredible views and a lesson in sailing these incredible vessels.

Perhaps Yorktown’s most acclaimed attraction is its new American Revolution Museum, telling the story of the nation’s founding, from the twilight of the colonial period to the dawn on the Constitution and beyond. Galleries feature period artefacts, immersive environments, interactive exhibits and films. There are artillery demonstrations and wooden musket drills at the re-created Continental Army encampment, and an area dedicated to the 18th century life of rural farmers.

If you want to re-live the fun times of childhood freedom, you should head to Go Ape Williamsburg, where a treetop adventure course through Freedom Park provides an exhilarating experience. Those who adore animals will have a great time at Fox Wire Farm Alpacas, where you can have up-close encounters with some of the most adorable creatures on the planet. There are also two security guard llamas protecting them from natural predators, who stand sentinel with their quirky dreadlock appearance.

Also, a visit to Busch Gardens is an absolute must – even if theme parks are not your usual delight – as this park is hugely entertaining whether you partake in the high-thrill rollercoaster rides or not. Busch Gardens Williamsburg has been named the Most Beautiful Theme Park in the World every year since 1990.

For a truly local experience, we highly recommend a visit to the Virginia Beer Company, where craft beers are brewed using seasonal ingredients and served indoors or out on a terrace where food trucks serve accompanying delights. This is a true treat, where a warm friendly atmosphere accompanies highly-acclaimed IPA’s.
