Baker City

Baker City is located in Eastern Oregon, where miles of scenic byways, alpine wilderness, working cattle ranches, and basalt canyons are still the place for explorers to make their mark. Baker City is more than a charming downtown. You will want to visit the award-winning Barley Brown’s Brew Pub and the more than 100 historic buildings, but it is also the centrepiece of Baker County which is renowned as ‘the base camp of Eastern Oregon’ — which includes Snake River, the Oregon Trail, and Hells Canyon.

Take time to visit the Adler House Museum, a restored 1889 Italianate home that was once the residence of Baker City philanthropist Leo Adler. Also make sure you include the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Centre on your itinerary, offering a wonderfully in-depth look at the legendary history of the route.

Pendleton

Pendleton, located in Eastern Oregon, is the gateway to miles of scenic byways, alpine wilderness, working cattle ranches, and basalt canyons. Its cowboy heritage is still strong – being the home of the Pendleton Round-up Rodeo, one of the largest and oldest rodeos in the world. Aside from these, its Old West roots are still unmistakable. Simply saunter through Pendleton’s saloons and steakhouses to experience that cowboy feeling for yourself.

The West is still wild in Pendleton. This is a city that prides itself on its heritage. Discover its colorful past at a cultural museum, underground tour, bronze art trail, or the world-famous Pendleton Round-Up. It’s like stepping back in time without losing modern-day comforts. After all, where else can you learn about native tribes, attend a rodeo, go golfing, drink craft beer, and play slots all on the same day?

Pendleton offers varied shopping opportunities, from unique boutiques to familiar chain stores. Well known as a choice destination for antique lovers, there are at least a dozen stores specialising in everything from vintage clothing to furniture. Shopping for western wear and accouterments is a special treat here too! A visit to Hamley & Co., renowned as the maker of the finest saddles money can buy, is an absolute must. Measure up for your own Stetson and take home your own cowboy boots – it is a great opportunity to pick up these authentic wears.

Hells Canyon

Hells Canyon on the border of Oregon and Idaho is America’s deepest river gorge. This awe-inspiring spot attracts white-water rafters, hikers, campers, jet boaters, and outdoor junkies worldwide. With breathtaking scenery, steep terrain, rocky slopes, and the breathtaking scenic snake river, this Northeastern Oregon destination is a must-visit.

Hells Canyon encompasses a vast and remote region with dramatic changes in elevation, terrain, climate, and vegetation. Carved by the great Snake River, Hells Canyon plunges more than a mile below Oregon’s west rim, and 8,000 feet below snowcapped He Devil Peak of Idaho’s Seven Devils Mountains. There are no roads across Hells Canyon’s 10-mile wide expanse and only three roads in the state that lead to the Snake River between Hells Canyon Dam and the Oregon-Washington boundary.

Be on the lookout for bear, elk, mule deer, big horn sheep, and eagles as well as wildflowers, ancient pictographs, and log cabins left by prospectors, miners, and 19th-century settlers.
