Islands Of Massachusetts

Martha’s Vineyard

Located just 11km off the southern coast of Massachusetts, Martha’s Vineyard combines an island escape with New England charm and hospitality. Beautiful beaches ring the islands outer edge, while the interior is crisscrossed with many biking and walking trails accentuated by natural and cultivated foliage and flowers. Cosy lodging, casual and fine dining restaurants and a vibrant cultural life fill Martha’s Vineyard’s towns, including Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, West Tisbury, and Vineyard Haven.

Summer is the peak season for visitors to Martha’s Vineyard so expect it to be very busy during June, July and August when the temperatures average between 16 and 27C. This weather makes taking in the beautiful scenery and spending time outdoors, both on land and sea, wonderfully enjoyable. During Spring and Autumn, there will be smaller crowds and more tranquillity but the temperature is still around 17-20C.

Much of the Vineyard’s land remains pristine and unspoiled, from the colourful clay cliffs of Aquinnah to several nature preserves and in the spring and summer, the flora of Martha’s Vineyard bursts forth in all shades of green and colourful blooms.

Avid shoppers will feel right at home on the Vineyard, where boutique shops are the norm. There are no chain stores on the island, making nearly all purchases distinctive to the Vineyard and many artists and artisans make their homes here, selling their distinctive artwork and goods in the local galleries and shops.

As you’d expect from an island, seafood is what Vineyard restaurants do best, with much of the seafood served in the evening coming fresh from fishing boats that same morning. Many restaurants maintain a great ‘farm to table’ relationship with the local farmers too so you can be assured that everything is fresh and local.

Nantucket

Nantucket, a charming island 30 miles south of Cape Cod with windswept beaches, sand dunes, lighthouses, historic harbours, quaint inns, and a laid-back environment is the perfect getaway destination. Nantucket is home to some of the most pristine beaches in the world. Whether you prefer the gentle waters of Nantucket Sound or the wilder ocean waves, Nantucket Island has a beach you will love.

With miles of bike paths to all parts of the island, a bike is an ideal way to get around. On the water, you have an array of options from boating, fishing, seal cruises, whale watching, sailing, yachting, and more!

More than half a dozen museums are open during the season, featuring exhibits on Nantucket whaling, island art, Nantucket shipwrecks, Nantucket Lightship Baskets, and more.

Dining is some of the finest in the world from the best casual restaurants to fine dining on a Nantucket waterfront. When the sun goes down, there’s still plenty to do. Live bands from Rock to Jazz, karaoke, poker, trivia, and so much more.

Edgartown

Located on the southeastern side of Martha’s Vineyard, this elegant seaport village has preserved its colonial homes built by the whaling captains. Stroll along Main street where you will find delightful restaurants, quaint boutiques and art galleries in a true New England style. The main street leads out to the pretty harbour and yacht club (a favorite of yachtsmen).

Take a 15-minute walk from downtown to see the Edgartown lighthouse surrounded by stunning scenery. South beach is just one of its stunning beaches with its miles of sandy beach to get away from it all.

Outdoor enthusiasts appreciate South Cape Beach State Park, where sunbathing, fishing, swimming and hiking are popular pastimes.

Edgartown was used as the main shooting location for the town of Amity in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster Jaws. Many landmarks and buildings in Edgartown that were filmed in the movie can still be seen today.
