Ride on one of America’s last flag-stop trains. The Hurricane Turn Train has delivered Alaska locals to their remote cabins since 1923. Same as the Alaskans, you also have the opportunity to get off the train anywhere along the 55-mile stretch to hike or enjoy the scenery – you just have to be back when the train returns and you can stop the return train with the wave of a flag. Or stay onboard and enjoy the amazing remote scenery of the entire 110-mile route. Beginning in Talkeetna, the route threads its way along the Susitna River and through the Indian River Canyon. The highlight is the stunning Hurricane Gulch trestle (note only in rare instances, it may not be possible to see the Hurricane Gulch area due to other trains’ operation schedules). The creek is 296 feet below and the bridge spans 384 feet, the most expansive trestle on the route.
