Amarillo is the perfect place to get a big taste of Texas even if you only have a small amount of time. From canyons to old Cadillacs and gigantic steaks to grand scenery, the city is an Old West enthusiast’s dream.

One of the country’s best collections of Western art and artefacts can be found at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. Mosey on over to the Amarillo Livestock Auction to mingle with real cowboys as they go about the business of buying and selling cattle. (Every Monday). For those with interests that are more modern, the city boasts a great art museum and beautiful botanical gardens. If you’re travelling with kids, don’t miss the thrilling rides at Wonderland Park. The whole family will be in awe of the fantastic rock formations at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, where you can hike, mountain bike or enjoy horseback rides.

Get your kicks on Route 66. Amarillo offers over one mile of antiques and collectables to this historical route along Sixth between Georgia and Western Streets.

Dining is another great experience, make sure you stop at The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Microbrewery for its famous 72oz steak (its free if you can eat it in one hour) and a great Texas atmosphere.

Cadillac Ranch

As you explore Amarillo, be sure to bring a can of your favourite colour spray paint and check out Cadillac Ranch located just west of the city on Interstate 40. It’s an art installation with 10 Cadillacs buried headfirst into the earth and can be seen from a great distance. The cars represent the golden age of the American automobile and are open for the public to paint.
