  • Boston

Boston is a modern metropolis which is rich in history and culture. It has some of the best restaurants, hotels, nightlife and attractions in New England. Boston is very easy to get around.

Boston is America’s ‘’walking city’’ and that, combined with the fact that it has an excellent public transport system means it’s easy to get around so you don’t need to hire a car whilst you’re staying here.

It’s a modern, vibrant city which is rich in culture and history so you’ll need around three days to see just about everything there is to see. Enjoy walking the famous Freedom Trail, which is 2.5 miles in length, with 12 of its 16 sites located within a mile of one another. Another good walking route is the Black Heritage Trail, although there are a few hills to climb in the Beacon Hill area. The subway system in the city is clean and easy to use and a great way to travel around to get to places like Harvard University, Fenway Park, Sam Adams Brewery and the John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum. Other popular ways of getting around Boston include water taxi, pedicab, trolley tour and bicycle, the latter of which are available to rent using the Boston New Balance Hubway bike share service between March and November.

The city of Boston is served by Logan International Airport which, unlike many airports, is very close to downtown Boston so the journey to your hotel, once you’ve landed is just a short ride away…and it’s available for FREE! The Silver Line coach service picks-up and drops off at all terminals in Logan and takes just 15 minutes to get to Boston’s South Station which is a major transportation hub in the city giving you access to the subway and train services beyond Boston.

We all love to shop, and in Massachusetts there’s no tax on clothing purchase of $150 and under. If you spend over that amount, you only pay tax on the difference so a $200 purchase would mean you only pay tax on the $50 difference.

In this beautiful city there are many things to see and do that cost nothing at all. Here’s a few:

    • Walk along Commonwealth Avenue Mall and see some of the most magnificent homes in the city.
    • Find a bench in the city to sit on in Boston Common, just like in the movie Good Will Hunting.
    • Run, bike, stroll or sit along the Charles River Esplanade.
    • Sign up for a free tour of Faneuil Hall, or a 60 minute ranger led walking tour of the Freedom Trail or Black Heritage Trail by visiting the National Park Service Visitor Information Centre at Faneuil Hall.
    • Climb the steps of the Bunker Hill Monument.
    • Visit the USS Constitution in Charlestown Navy Yard.
    • Take a free public tour of the Boston Public Library, one of the most impressive buildings in the city.

    • Top Tip 1

Catch the Boston Red Sox in a game of baseball at their famous Fenway Park, which celebrated its millennium in 2012. Soak up the friendly but electric atmosphere as you try to work out the rules of the game!

    • Top Tip 2

Shopaholics should head to Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace for big-name as well as eclectic stores or to Newbury Street, the most exclusive shopping street in New England. Here you’ll find unique art and craft galleries, jewellery outlets and boutiques.

    • Top Tip 3

Cape Cod is one of the best places for a whale-watching boat trip (the season is from May to October). You may see dolphins as well as Humpback, Minke and Finback whales.

    • Top Tip 4

Escape the crowds on the more remote beaches of the Cape Cod National Seashore coastline. Or, take the foot passenger ferry from Hyannis to Oak Bluffs on the boutique island of Martha's Vineyard. Hire bicycles and ride to the south shore for the beautiful beaches.

    • Top Tip 5

So much of New England is about food! Try clam chowder in famous Quincy Market Food Hall, fresh lobster anywhere in Maine and, of course, a tub of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream made in Vermont.

    • Top Tip 6

Visit the Berkshires, Massachusetts in summer time and catch one of the many summer festivals. It’s the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the theatre festival in Stockbridge and the music festival in Tanglewood.

    • Top Tip 6

Ride the Cog Railway to the peak of Mount Washington in New Hampshire. You'll travel above the clouds and see some spectacular scenery along the way.

    • Top Tip 8

Old Sturbridge Village, Massachusetts is a living history museum which recreates an 1830’s New England rural village. Costumed staff perform the routines of everyday life of the 19th century.

    • Top Tip 9

Visit the breathtaking millionaires’ mansions of Newport, Rhode Island, built over 100 years ago by America's wealthiest families - the Vanderbilt’s, Astor’s and Belmont’s to name but a few.

    • Top Tip 10

Enjoy a summer boat ride aboard The Spirit of Ethan Allen or a lunch cruise on the Northern Lights cruise ship on the 125-mile long Lake Champlain.
